UN Forces Adopt New Roadmap For Fight Against Jihadists In Mali
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) says it has adopted a new roadmap in its fight against jihadist groups in the centre and north of Mali.
According to a MINUSCA communiqué, sighted by HumAngle, the decision was taken during the quarterly meeting of the military coordination organ in Mali held in the MINUSMA head office in Bamako.
The communiqué revealed that the military coordination organ brings together four commanders of the international forces namely MINUSMA, the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM), the G5 Sahel and the French Barkhane operation as well as the Chief of Staff of the Malian army.
The document explained that the new military coordination organ has as main objective, the reinforcement of cooperation in security, exchange of information and support between the principal actors for peace and security to the benefit of the Malian people.
“During this quarterly meeting, discussions were centred on the security situation in Mali, the projects to develop and the priority of each of the forces,” the MINUSMA communiqué revealed.
It stated that one ambition of “this meeting is to transform the military coordination organ into a decision-making instance with the stakes clearly defined and followed up. In addition, a roadmap defining the new common objectives was adopted”.
Meanwhile, MINUSMA recalled that at the military level, it responds to the exigencies contained in Resolution 2531 (2020) of the UN Security Council related to the MINUSMA mandate which stipulates that “The Council prays the Secretary General to ensure that MINUSMA, the defense and security forces of Mali, the joint G5 Sahel forces, the French forces and the European Union missions in Mali coordinate their activities, exchange information and give the required support.
The Council must regularly organise meetings of the coordination body in Mali, which is the principal context permitting this coordination, MINUSMA continued.
About two weeks ago, several soldiers were reported killed and others injured in two separate attacks in central Mali, according to a statement by the army.
Reports said unidentified gunmen raided the Sokoura military post Tuesday, October 13 in the Mopti region, according to the Malian Armed Forces.
The army said urgent measures were taken in the area, near the town of Bankass, with troops on alert amid an ongoing operation to track the attackers.
A unit sent to reinforce this operation had fallen into an ambush nearby in the town of Paroukou.
