FARDC Kills Militia Leader In North Kivu, DR Congo

The Mai-Mai group allegedly has ties with the notorious ADF rebel group, collaborating on military operations.

The second-in-command of the Mai-Mai Baraka militia group has been killed by the Democratic Republic of Congo national army, FARDC, in the south of Beni territory of North Kivu.

He was killed on Thursday Nov. 4.

According to Captain Anthony Mwalushayi,  the army spokesperson of Operations Sokola 1 in Beni, Muchunga was killed during clashes between the army and combatants of the Mai-Mai in Rwahwa village, 25 km to the west of Butembo town.

Muchunga and his fighters have been accused of being responsible for several killings against the population and attacks targeting military positions in the Bashu chiefdom.

The army spokesperson revealed that the Mai-Mai Baraka group has links with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), accused of being responsible for the deaths of several civilians in Beni.

“Their relationship is based exclusively on military collaboration and nothing else,” Captain  Mwalushayi declared.
