UNOCHA, NHF Record $32.9 Million In Donations In 2020

The United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Nigeria says it raised a record $32.9 million in 2020 to mobilise and provide assistance to the most vulnerable populations in the country’s Northeast.

The funding which went to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) from donor countries, was the highest on record since the establishment of the fund in 2017.

The organization which has been providing life-saving aid in Nigeria to those in need, with 7.8 million vulnerable people receiving assistance from the UN and other partner NGOs last year.

Most of those who received humanitarian assistance are those in crisis regions affected by insecurity coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic in the northeast, mainly in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.


“A warm thank you to all donor countries who helped the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund #NHF raised $32.9 million in 2020, the highest budget recorded since the fund was established in 201,” the organization said in a tweet.

“We look forward to your continued solidarity to save even more lives in Nigeria in 2021.”

Amongst the donor countries are Germany, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, South Korea, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Qatar.

A total of 8.7 million people will be requiring assistance in 2021, UNOCHA said. This is an increase in close to one million people compared to last year.

Edward Kallon, the organisation’s humanitarian coordinator, has already called for the international community for support in providing funds to enable the provision of the required humanitarian aid.
