The Nigerian military on Sunday evening released the video clip of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) gunships engaging Islamic State West Province (ISWAP) in New Marte, Borno State, which resulted in heavy casualties by the insurgents.
The air operation conducted on the night of Friday through to the early hours of Saturday were in response to ISWAP insurgents’ attack in which they overran the Nigerian Army base at the abandoned Lake Chad basin quarters in New Marte.
“After successfully repelling a Boko Haram/ Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists’ attack on Marte, with the destruction of seven gun trucks by combined ground and air operations, the Air Task Force of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has obliterated additional 6 gun trucks and eliminated scores of terrorists who were attempting to reinforce their colleagues in the attack,” according to Maj.- Gen. John Enenche, the Coordinator of Defence Media Operations.
The general explained that the operations were carried out by NAF helicopter gunships which engaged the convoy of ISWAP gun trucks as they approached the Marte axis for reinforcement.
“The helicopters delivered accurate hits in their multiple waves of attack, obliterating no fewer than 6 additional gun trucks, which were seen engulfed in flames across the battlespace. Several other terrorists were mopped up in follow-on attacks as the helicopter gunships continued to strafe the fleeing ISWAP elements,” Enenche added.
