Lagos Orders All Public, Private Schools To Resume Jan 18

The Lagos State Government has ordered all schools in the state to reopen for the second term of 2020/21 academic session from Monday, January 18, 2021.

Folasade Adefisayo, the Commissioner for Education, said this in a statement which was signed by Kayode Abayomi, the Head, Public Affairs , Ministry of education on Monday.

According to the statement, schools were also asked to make virtual learning available.

ā€œAll public and private schools below the tertiary level in Lagos State should be reopened for the second term 2020/21 academic session from Monday, 18th of January, 2021,ā€ the statement reads.

The commissioner also asked teachers, students, and visitors to wear facemasks at all times.

ā€œObserve physical distancing, embrace regular handwashing with soap under running water and maintain a high standard of personal hygiene within the school premises.”

She also said schools should have flexible plans where students and teachers who feel sick can teach or learn from home via available online platforms.

ā€œ Schools should also strive to avoid any COVID-19 infection among all students and staff,” Adefisayo said.

She added that schools should make efforts to comply with all the outlined COVID-19 requirements for resumption schools.

This, she noted, is not just for the improvement of overall school operations but for the safe reopening of academic activities to support the Lagos State Governmentā€™s quest for a full return.

In order to curb the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria, Boss Mustapha, the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, in December ordered the closure of all schools in the country until January 18, 2021.

However, Rivers and Enugu state governments said they would reopen schools on January 4 which is contrary to the directive given by the Federal Government that all schools should open on January 18. Bayelsa State Government said its schools would resume on January 11.

Recently, there has been an increase in coronavirus cases across Nigeria.

Health experts, however, attributed the increase to weak enforcement of protocols especially in Abuja and Lagos which they noted could be responsible for the development.
