Kano State Government Votes N199 Million To Revive 2 Dams For Enhanced Water Supply
The Kano State Government is to spend N199 million to conduct repairs on Watari Dam and the irrigation dam in Bagwai Local Government Area to provide potable water and enhance agriculture production.
The announcement came after HumAngle reported about water scarcity in the state which exposes the population to hardship.
An investigation revealed that Kano State Water Board is incapacitated by obsolete equipment and resources as well as a negative attitude by the populace to function effectively.
In a statement on Tuesday, following HumAngle’s investigation, Mr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, the Project Coordinator in the state Agro-Pastoral Development Project, said the work was part of measures to mollify the potential of COVID-19 on food security and nutrition in the state.
The statement was signed by Ameen Yassar, the project Communication Specialist.
“The project will invest in the restoration of the Watari drainage, including the night reservoir to pacify gully erosion that is threatening the dam embankment. More than 150 hectares of land damaged within the vicinity of the land will be reclaimed,” Muhammad said.
He added that the project would also fund the rehabilitation of other irrigation facilities within the state and support subsistence and commercial farmers to access equipment for land preparation, harvesting and post-harvesting operations.
“This will sustainably increase production, yield and make crops residues and agro-industrial by-products more abundant for animal feeding,” Muhammad added.
No fewer than 1,000 unemployed youth will be grouped into 200 production hubs around irrigation schemes and be supported with grants to acquire machinery and materials. This activity will improve the availability of crop residue for livestock in the state, he explained.

Sir,
Thank you very much for the coverage given to this story which emanated from my office. However, let me quickly point out that we are not reviving 2 dams as you metioned. We are only working on Watari dam and we stated that clearly in our Press Release.
Secondly, we are working on the dam solely for irrigation purposes and not for water supply as you stated.
At KSADP, which is a project funded by the Islamic Development Bank and the Lives and Livelihood Fund, we do not have the mandate to execute urban or semi-urban water supply projects.
