Gabon Government is moving towards tightening the restrictive measures put in place against the spread of COVID-19 following the indication that cases of infection are on the rise.
Latest figures released by the country’s – Pilot Committee for the Followup of Actions Against the Coronavirus – (COPIL) are not reassuring as the country registered a record 120 new cases within three days on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021.
The country has so far recorded a total of 10,019 coronavirus infections since March last year, and the most recent infections have been registered in the provinces of Estuaire where 75 persons out of the 4,659 tested in Libreville were positive.
In Upper Ogooue, 11 persons out of 100 tested in Moanda returned positive and Ogooue-Maritime, where 34 persons out of the 89 tested in Port-Gentil, were positive.
Three days earlier, on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, 80 new cases were registered in the country, as against 40 new cases registered three days earlier.
As of Tuesday, Gabon has a total of 10,019 COVID-19 patients and it has so far successfully treated 9,732 cases which is a 97.1 per cent success rate. Unfortunately, 66 persons in the country have so far lost their lives to the coronavirus since March 2020 when the country recorded its index case.
COPIL reports that within the first 19 days of the 2021 year, the country has registered 448 COVID-19 positive cases, which constitutes a record in comparison to the last three months of the year 2020.
In effect, 190 new cases were registered in the month of October 2020, while 246 cases were detected in November 2020 and 347 cases in December 2020.
Seventeen coronavirus patients are currently on admission since January 1, 2021, with 11 of them under reanimation, which is also a record, according to COPIL.
