DR Congo Soldiers, M23 Rebels Clash In North Kivu

After a lull of several weeks, fierce fighting resumed on Thursday, May 19 between the FARDC and rebels of the M23 movement in Rutshuru, North Kivu.

After a lull of several weeks, fierce fighting resumed on Thursday, May 19 between the DR Congo national army, FARDC and rebels of the M23 movement in Rutshuru, North Kivu.

Fighters of rebel leader, Sultani Makenga, said the FARDC soldiers simultaneously attacked several of their positions first.

But, the FARDC rejected the accusation, saying it was the rebels who first attacked FARDC positions in Kabasanza.

The last clashes between the FARDC and the M23 rebels took place about a month ago in the localities of Chenerero, Jomba, and Bugusa.

The two camps have always denied being the first to attack and the new clashes are taking place at a time when the DR Congo government has dispatched a new team to the eastern part of the country to prepare for the second round of negotiations between the Kinshasa government and armed groups following the recent less-than-successful talks in Nairobi, Kenya.
