#COVID19: Cameroon Records 4,112 Cases In One Week
COVID-19 cases in Cameroon are spiking and the government is yet to commence any vaccination programme.
A total of 4,112 new COVID-19 cases were recorded by Cameroon in the last one week, taking the total number of infections in the country to 57,337.
According to figures released by the country’s Ministry of Public Health, 4,395 patients who were infected by the virus were successfully treated and discharged from hospitals within the past week.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March last year, the country has successfully treated 51,769 patients, while 53 patients died from the virus within the last seven days alone, bringing the total number of fatalities from the virus to 851.
There are currently 427 COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in health facilities throughout the country with 122 being supported by oxygen.
This galloping number of COVID-19 cases has made Cameroon the 13th most infected nation in Africa, and it may soon become leading.
Last week, the Cameroon National Order of Doctors, the umbrella body for medical doctors called on the Cameroonian government to take important measures to limit the propagation of the virus in the face of the indifference of citizens towards the measures put in place.
The doctors who expressed their pains at seeing an increasing number of Cameroonians dying from the virus said they were completely demoralised with the drastic increase in the number of COVID-19 infections and called for the immediate action, beginning of vaccination against the virus.
The vaccination however remains a pipe dream because the government is yet to decide on which vaccine to be authorised in the vaccination campaign.
The National Order of Doctors however announced that it had on its own placed an order for 1000 vaccines from Switzerland to support the government’s effort at fighting the pandemic.
