COVID-19: Sokoto State To Track Returnees From House To House

To combat the spread of COVID-19 in Sokoto State, the government is to embark on house to house tracking of returnees from countries affected by the disease as well as states in Nigeria which have recorded cases.

The plan was announced at a meeting in Sokoto on Saturday between the chairman of the Sokoto State COVID-19 Task Force and Emergency Response Committee and the Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Ali Inname.

The others at the meeting were the directors of health in the 23 local governments.

Although there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Sokoto, the state is planning on intensifying precautionary measures to cut the transmission chain of the virus.

Dr Inname said that the state would liaise with appropriate authorities to track all returnees from outside the country or Nigerian states affected by COVID-19 to screen them.

Currently, Nigeria has confirmed 214 coronavirus cases across 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as well as four deaths and 25 recoveries since the index case was recorded in Lagos in March.

Sokoto state has yet to record any case but since the index case was announced, the government has taken measures to check the spread of the virus.

Among actions that the government has taken are the closure of boundaries with other states and international borders, environmental fumigation, provision of protection equipment and regular awareness campaigns.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Governor, Malam Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved the expansion of the state COVID-19 Task Force by co-opting other people.

The government also created sub-committees for the Emergency Response team to cover all the 23 Local government areas.

The sub-committees are to be chaired by the three Zonal Special Advisers on Routine Immunization with local government sole administrators, Director, Primary Health Care and Zonal directors of each senatorial zone as members.
