COVID-19: NMA Donates PPE To Nurses, Midwives In Kano

As part of its effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has donated Personal Protective equipment (PPE) to nurses and midwives in Kano State.

Addressing newsmen at the NMA secretariat, Zaria Road, Kano, the outgoing Chairman of NMA, Dr Sanusi Muhammad Bala, on Monday said the gesture was part of the activities of the association’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for Saturday.

Bala said the items would be distributed to all Kano State members of National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANM) to enable them to support the doctors in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

He noted that medical personnel were at risk of contracting diseases as the number of infections among doctors and other health workers were alarming, hence the need for self-protection in order to be healthy enough to treat patients.

HumAngle recalls that on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, the Bala-led NMA said that 34 doctors had tested positive for the novel coronavirus with one doctor dead from the virus infection in the state.

Bala explained that many of the victims were doctors working at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and other private clinics.

According to him, many of them were infected through normal clinical routines while attending to unsuspected COVID-19 cases.

Receiving the items, the public Relations Officer of NANM in Kano, State, Ahmad Hamzat, expressed appreciation for the gesture and promised the judicious use of the items

The items include facemasks, protective glasses and clothes.

New executive members of NMA in Kano will be elected on Saturday in a zoom meeting in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines to avoid mass gathering of people.
