Cameroon Validates 2021-2026 Congo Basin Forest Development Agenda
Cameroon has ratified a forest development programme that will encourage partnership between the public and private sector in the protection of the environment through investment in tourism and the development of spaces to favour local development.
The Government of Cameroon has formally validated the Congo Basin Forest Management Programme.
The validation took place on Friday, March 5, during a meeting in Mbankomo, a council area situated in the Mefou and Akono division of the Central region and was presided over by the Minister of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED).
The validation period is from 2021 to 2026 and is dubbed “integrated management of the forestry landscape of Cameroon within the Congo Basin.”
The World Environment Fund (WEF) will provide $10.4 million (5.6 billion FCFA) funding for the program, on an allocation of $13.99 million ($7.6 billion FCFA), obtained by Cameroon within the context of the seventh phase of WEF.
The project will be executed by the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) bureau in Cameroon.
According to Hele Pierre, the Minister of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, “it would above all be a question of encouraging partnership between the public and private sector in the protection of the environment through investment in the domain of tourism and the development of spaces to favour local development.”
Clotilde Ngomba, the Country Director of WWF Cameroon, affirmed that “the execution agencies have already been identified.
Cameroon has agreed to put in place integrated approaches based on the forestry landscapes, to reinforce governance of local communities and populations in the affected forests and also develop partnerships with the private sector.
