HumAngle’s Head of Investigations Desk, ‘Kunle Adebajo, has been selected to participate in the second Dubawa Fact-checking Fellowship organised by the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) for journalists in Nigeria and Ghana.
Last week, the paper’s Special Projects Editor, Aliyu Dahiru Aliyu, was announced as one of the few journalists taking part in the fellowship’s first training batch.
The programme, supported by the Heinrich Boll Stiftung Foundation and National Endowment for Democracy, is aimed at educating journalists on detecting as well as countering misinformation.
The second training, which will be held between Monday, July 20 and Thursday, July 23, will focus on accountability journalism, fact-checking tools, Freedom of Information requests, data analysis and presentation, and so on. The fellowship itself will run till December.
PTCIJ programme director, Oluwatosin Alagbe, described the programme as timely and much-needed, especially during the global health crisis.
“There is no better time than now, during this pandemic, to consolidate and expand on the Dubawa Fellowship Programme launched in 2019,” she said.
“The world is rife with misinformation and disinformation, and these fellows, the best in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Uganda, are saddled with the task of debunking and researching the trends.
“They will also institute the culture of fact-checking and verification in their respective newsrooms.”
The maiden edition of the fellowship was organised in 2019 with trainees camping in Abuja. But the organisers say the programme will be conducted virtually this year in meeting with COVID-19 safety measures.
“This year brings a lot of promise and I am optimistic about the ability of the fellows to accomplish great things and leave their mark,” noted Adedeji Adekunle, PTCIJ’s deputy programme director.
