1 Die, 3 Missing In DR Congo’s Canoe Attack
A yet-to-be-identified group has attacked four traders in a canoe incidence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
One person has died, and three others are reported missing following an armed attack on an engine canoe in Lake Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to local sources, the attack that took place Monday night in the Lucho village involved traders returning from Bukavu through Idiwi.
Karongo Kalaja, the Idiwi territory administrator, revealed that the engine canoe was the target of an attack by yet-to-be-identified armed individuals.
“The canoe right now is in the hands of armed people still to be identified. They succeeded in killing four people, but as of now, only one corpse has been found. Three others are yet to be found. The attackers took away all the merchandise that the canoe was carrying.”
He further indicated that some canoes have since been dispatched to Lake Kivu, searching for the three missing individuals’ corpses.
“Incidents like this have become so rampant resulting in the loss of lives and property, yet the government behaves as if nothing is happening,” a resident of Lucho who did not reveal his name told HumAngle.
“One would have expected the government to station marine security forces around Lake Kivu to be carrying out patrols for the security of the inhabitants around here.”
“The people here feel completely abandoned. It is such a sad situation. Let us hope with this latest incident the government would wake up from its slumber and come to the assistance of the citizens here.”
