Police in Anambra, Southeast Nigeria have arrested two suspected cultists in Awka, the state capital.
Haruna Mohammed, a Superintendent of Police and Public Relations Officer of Anambra Command disclosed this in a statement.
Mohammed said the suspects were arrested following a raid of their hideout after an intelligent report on their activities.
He said one locally made double barrel pistol and live cartridge were recovered from the suspects, adding that they have confessed to their membership of Vikings Confraternity Cult group
He gave their names as Ahamefuna Onyema andDestiny Anyaku, who are 41 and 38-year-old respectively.
“In order to stem the tide of cultism and other nefarious activities in the state, the Command Anti-Cult Unit raided a criminal hideout in Awka following intelligence report,” the statement read.
“Two suspects, Ahamefuna Onyema ‘m’ aged 41years and Destiny Anyaku ‘m’ aged 38 years both residing at Umueze village,Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State were arrested.”
“Exhibit recovered in their possessions includes one locally made double barrel pistol and one live cartridge concealed inside a bag hung on the neck by one of the suspects,” he stated.
Awka has been at the mercy of cultism activities as youth in the town engage in inter cult killings and robbery of residents.
But the Police command promised to reduce the prevalence to the barest minimum while calling on parents and civil society organisations to join in the efforts to eradicate the menace.
