Kano Hisbah Board Bars Radio Station From Addressing Friday As Black
The Kano State Hisbah Board, saddled with the responsibility of enforcing Sharia Islamic law in the state, has written a letter to a radio station, Cool FM 96.9 operating in Kano metropolis, Northwest Nigeria, barring it from addressing Friday as Black when advertising products.
According to Wikipedia “Black Friday” is an informal name for the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America, which is celebrated on every fourth Thursday of November.
The “Black Friday” is used worldwide to mean a day for promotional sales where goods are sold at discounted and cheap prices.
It was learnt that the “Black Friday ” advert is an agency sponsored promotion distributed to broadcast stations including Cool FM in Kano State, though some radio stations have altered the advert in the Hausa language.
According to the letter signed by Abubakar Muhammad Ali, the Principal Executive Officer II of Hisbah Board, on behalf of the Commander-General, Harun Muhammad Sani Ibn Sina, the board said it received complaints on the conduct of Black Friday Sales on November 27.
“I am directed to write and notify you that the office is in receipt of a complaint for the conduct of “Black Friday Sales” on November 27, 2020,” part of the letter read.
However, the letter stated that considering the fact that Kano is a Muslims dominated state, Friday must not be called “Black”.
It added that Friday is regarded as a holy day in Islam and tagging it as “Black” is derogatory and would not be condoned
The letter said, “in view of the foregoing you are requested to stop the calling the day as “Black Friday” with immediate effect and note that Hisbah Men will be around for surveillance purposes with a view to avoiding the occurrence of any immoral activities as maintaining peace, harmony and stability in Kano State”.
