At least nine soldiers were reportedly killed and an unknown number of soldiers and local self-defence partners missing after ISWAP ambushed the team on patrol along Damboa – Maiduguri road.
Four vehicles belonging to the troops and Vigilante were taken away by the attackers.
The Army in January reopened the Damboa Maiduguri highway for civilians heading to Southern Borno from the state capital Maiduguri. However, the road has remained unsafe for civilians and troops.
A source knowledgeable with the conflict in Maiduguri told HumAngle that, an ambush is expected on that road.

On June 10, Nigerian soldiers suffered an ambush along the same route, resulting in a number of casualties, abductions and seized military vehicles.
