Gabon To Receive 15,000 Doses Of Russian COVID-19 Vaccine

Gabon is taking delivery of 15,000 doses of Russian COVID-19 vaccine in addition to the 100,000 doses of the Chinese vaccine that it had earlier received.

The Republic of Gabon is set to receive 15,000 doses of the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik-V, the government has said.

Gabon has already received 100,000 doses of the Chinese vaccine SINOPHARM.

Sputnik-V will reinforce the current vaccination campaign, Jessye Ella Ekogha, the spokesperson of the Presidency announced Tuesday, April 13.

“The current national vaccination campaign which began on March 23 would be reinforced within the coming weeks,” said Ekogha, adding that the government has ordered a new consignment of the Chinese vaccine to add to the 100,000 doses donated by the Chinese government.

Ekogha revealed that so far, 4,043 persons in Libreville, Owendo and Akanda council areas have been vaccinated with the Chinese variant.

According to the Presidential spokesperson, 200,000 new doses of the Chinese vaccine have been ordered and would be paid for by the Gabonese government and “would arrive soon.”

The Russian vaccine was approved for use by the Gabonese government on August 11, 2020 and has come under criticism in the western countries due to the speed with which it was developed and put into the market.

Most of the criticism against the Russian vaccine came from the European Union, France, Germany and the Lancet, a professional medical journal.
