Former Central African Republic head of state, Francois Bozize, is to be tried for being implicated in the rebellion that tried to stop the holding of legislative and presidential elections in the country on December 27, 2020.
According to a communiqué issued by the Bangui public prosecutor’s office on Monday, an investigation to this effect has been opened against the former president and his presumed accomplices “in connection with the ongoing destabilization and rebellion”.
Reliable sources in Bangui, the national capital told HumAngle on Tuesday that several rebels have already been arrested and a judicial investigation has been opened against them for rebellion and actions against the security of the state among other offences.
“From the interrogation of the first persons held by the judicial authorities, evidence has been adduced of a connection leading to other co-authors, accomplices and leaders of the rebellion,” the communiqué reveals.

The Central African Republic government had on December 19, 2020 accused Bozize, whose candidature for the presidential election was rejected, of an “attempted coup d’etat” following attacks which he was accused of having organized with rebels with a view to “marching on Bangui” the national capital.
The communiqué from the office of the Bangui public prosecutor came some hours before the proclamation of the provisional results of the December 27, 2020 presidential election according to which the outgoing president, Faustin Archange Touadera, won reelection with 53.9 per cent of the votes cast.
The final official results would be proclaimed on January 19, 2021 by the Constitutional Court.
