DR Congo Militia Leader Accused Of Ivory Trafficking Arrested
Muhukambuto, who is a former soldier of the DR Congo national army, has been arrested and taken to Goma.
A militia leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo accused of involvement in ivory trafficking has been arrested.
Jackson Muhukambuto was arrested last week in Butembo by Eco-guards and taken to Goma from where he was transported by air to Kinshasa on Sunday, June 13, 2021, to be tried.
Muhukambuto, who is a former soldier of the Congolese national army, is accused of trafficking elephant tusks from the Virunga national park.
The militia leader and his fighters are also accused of having killed several civilians and are active in the north of Rutshuru and south Lubero.
He is reported to have connections with certain rogue individuals in the national army and he, along with his militia, have also been reported to have collaborated with the Mai-Mai groups, including those led by Charles Bokande and Shetani.
Jackson Muhukambuto will be tried in Kinshasa in the days ahead, according to a source in the office of the state prosecutor in Kinshasa.
