Four rebels of the Mai-Mai Baraka group were killed and one other captured on Wednesday, Jan. 12, in an attack on a police control post at Kyambogho, situated to the south entrance of Butembo, North Kivu.
One of the police officers who were manning the control post was also killed and eyewitnesses report hearing gunshots around the post at 10:00 p.m. local time during the night in question.
According to Capt. Anthony Mwalushayi, the military spokesperson of Operations Sokola 1, during the operation, two DR Congo soldiers also suffered bullet wounds and have been taken to the Butembo hospital for medical attention.
“The Mai-Mai rebels of the Baraka group appeared from nowhere and attacked the elements of law and order based at the Kyambogho checkpoint while they were controlling vehicles and passers-by,” the army spokesperson revealed, adding that the attack was not the first on the Kyambogho control post which had earlier been attacked by other rebels.
