Boko Haram Launches Daring Attack In Gwoza

Boko Haram terrorists on Sunday, launched a daring night attack on the garrison town of Gwoza, Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, prompting the Nigerian troops to deploy air and ground to repel the insurgents.

The attack conducted from multiple entry points HumAngle learned led to the deployment of heavy and light weapons by the military as troops engaged the insurgents.

Gwoza Local Government Area is located in the south-east of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, the epicentre of the decades-long insurgency.

As of the time of this report, it was not clear if the attack recorded any casualty.

The attack within the area of influence of the Shekau led faction of Boko Haram signals a  possible resurgence and risks to civilians and security forces in areas where the group operates.

For months Boko Haram has targeted its attacks on vulnerable settlements and killing of civilians as well as security operatives.

Between 2014 and  2015, Gwoza town served as the headquarters of Boko Haram, but the military re-took Gwoza town in March 2015, enabling displaced locals to gradually return.

According to Doctors without borders, Gwoza is home to 60,000 people, many of whom were displaced from their homes by the conflict.

Living conditions are difficult, there is little humanitarian aid, and frequent clashes take place between the military and armed groups in the area.
