10,787 Displaced Persons From Two Niger Republic Villages In Need Of Humanitarian Assistance – MSF
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) also known as Doctors Without Borders says a total of 10,787 displaced persons from Tchombangou and Zaroumdareye communities in the Niger Republic after a deadly attack by armed persons suspected to be members of Islamic State on January 2 are currently in need of humanitarian assistance.
Already, scores of people in the region are seeking refuge in other neighbouring villages, the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) stated.
The organisation, which already had teams on the ground in Tillabéri, says it has accessed the situation on the ground, to determine the needs of those displaced by the attacks.
According to the MSF’s Twitter account, the people of Tchombangou and Zaroumdareye have absconded their hometowns and taken refuge in neighbouring communities, including Mangaïzé.
But Mangaïzé has been unable to cope with the influx of displaced people, due to limited reception capabilities.
“These displaced people have no place to sleep, no blankets or even food,” MSF stated.
“According to local authorities, a total of 1,541 households, or 10,787 forcibly displaced persons, are in the village of Mangaïzé.”
MSF said it has so far been able to provide medical assistance such as general consultations with two mobile clinics that have treated 72 people and 10 pregnant women.
As part of the nutritional screening, 26 children were screened as well.
Many of those who were consulted by MSF psychologists have shown to have suffered some sort of mental ordeal.
“20 presented signs of post-traumatic and psychosomatic stress as well as anxiety,” MSF added.
