Terrorists Ambush Police Patrol Van, Kill 2 Along Maiduguri-Damaturu Road
Terrorists believed to be members of ISWAP attacked a convoy of police officers along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.
Two police officers died, and five others sustained injuries after a Nigeria Police patrol van in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, ran into an ambush by terrorists on Sunday, May 22, officials said.
The Sunday incident was the first in many months since terrorists believed to be Boko Haram or ISWAP had attacked a major road linking Borno State with the rest of Nigeria.
A reliable police source informed HumAngle that the ambush was staged at Goni Matari village, which is located between Mainok and Jakana villages along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.
Jakana is about 40 kilometres away from Maiduguri.
“It was a sad incident,” said a senior police officer who spoke to HumAngle on the phone.
“Our men had resumed the daily patrol of the highway when they came under attack at about 8 a.m,” the source explained.
“The gunmen whom we believe manoeuvred their way through a dug parapet and laid ambush on the patrol van.”
Goni Matari village is one of the routes normally used by Boko Haram terrorists for most of their assaults and kidnapping of travellers.
“Two of our gallant policemen died from bullet wounds while five others survived with bullet injuries,” the police source said.
“The attackers had also set ablaze two of the vehicles of the police officers before fleeing upon sighting the arrival of a reinforcement team of Nigeria police Crack Squad from Maiduguri.”
The source added that five of the injured police officers had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
