Southwest Nigeria Governor Imposes Curfew After Violent Clash Claims 1 Life
Oyo State Governor, Southwest Nigeria, Seyi Makinde has imposed a curfew in the state after violence broke up, claiming 1 life.
Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria on Saturday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew after a violent clash left one person dead in Ibadan, the state’s capital.
HumAngle gathered that the clash had first erupted on Thursday at Shasha market in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, when a pregnant woman and a cart pusher had a heated argument over waste disposal.
The cart pusher had allegedly assaulted the pregnant woman after she insisted that he must clear the waste he dumped in front of her store.
While trying to resolve the altercation between the two persons, a cobbler, Sakirundeen Adeola, popularly known as Korex, was reportedly punched by the pusher, causing him to collapse on the spot.
Residents said Adeola was confirmed dead on the way to hospital on Thursday.
His death caused an outrage in the community.
This followed a clash between Adeola’s friends who were enraged by his death and the pusher’s.
In the process, some shops and houses were razed down while the market was deserted.
Confirming the incident, Olugbenga Fadeyi, the police spokesperson in the state, said “Massive police deployment and that of the sister security agencies were made to douse tension.”
“Critical stakeholders have also been consulted to appeal to the people. Normalcy is gradually returning to the area.”
Curfew
Meanwhile, the state governor has imposed a curfew in Sasha market and its environs, saying it was to forestall breakdown of law and order in the conflict area.
The curfew is to run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
He also ordered that the Shasha market be closed indefinitely, a statement by the governor’s media aide, Taiwo Adisa said on Saturday.
“His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde has directed the immediate closure of Shasha market indefinitely following reports of a breach of peace in the area,” Adisa’s statement read.
“The governor has also approved the imposition of curfew on Shasha. It will run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.”
Makinde urged residents to go about their legitimate businesses peacefully, warning that anyone caught perpetrating violence will face the wrath of the law.
