Nigeria’s growing insecurity and insufficient policing have led to the growth of vigilantes and militias with support from state authorities. The government of Zamfara state, the epicentre of the crises in northwest Nigeria, is currently amidst controversy surrounding a plan to provide civilians with firearms to protect themselves.
In today’s episode, we look at the security risks of the increasing proliferation of state-level militias, especially the potential dangers of giving civilians firearms.
