Troops of Nigerian Army backed by Air support have repelled an attack by Boko Haram fighters on Askira Uba Local Government Area in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
On Saturday evening, Boko Haram fighters launched a daring attack on Askira Uba in 15 gun trucks leading to fierce clashes between the insurgents and troops.
The troops recovered several weapons and a gun truck used by the insurgents and killed dozens of the fighters during the attack.
Askira Uba is about 190km from Maiduguri, the state capital, and shares boundaries with Biu, Chibok, Gwoza and Hawul local government areas.
The local government area is also close to Sambisa Forest.
In a statement, on December 13, the Spokesman for 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Ado Isa, said troops of 28 Task Force Brigade of Sector Operation LAFIYA DOLE, inflicted heavy casualties on Boko Haram terrorists.
He added that the troops captured four gun trucks while some additional gun trucks were destroyed by the Air Task Force which responded swiftly.
“Scores of the terrorists were killed and over 20 terrorists’ dead bodies were counted. Additionally, three Boxer motorcycles, three Anti Aircraft guns, two PKT Machine Guns, 10 AK 47 rifles and 13 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bombs as well as large cache of ammunition and other weapons were captured from the terrorists among others.
“Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme sacrifice and two others were wounded during the encounter and are stable/responding to treatment,” Isa said.
In April, Boko Haram insurgents stormed into Rumirgo village in Askira Uba, shooting indiscriminately and sending residents fleeing into the surrounding countryside.
In December 2019, Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, expressed serious concern over attacks by Boko Haram in some towns and villages of Askira Uba Local Government Area.
His comments followed attacks in Chul, Rumirgo, Lassa, Mussa, Kufa and Gwandam towns and villages all in Askira Uba Local Government Area.
The decade-long Boko Haram insurgency has killed over 30,000 people in Northeast Nigeria and displaced around two million from their homes.
