The military operational headquarters of Nigeria’s decade long counterinsurgency campaign known as operation Lafiya Dole has restricted access to roads around the dreaded Timbuktu triangle in Borno state.
The restriction is to pave the way for a new subsidiary operation fireball against Boko Haram positions.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, recently launched “Operation Fireball,” during the combined conference of Chief of Army Staff held on October 6, in Maiduguri.
The Army chief said the new operation would extend to insurgents’ hideouts of Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains and the Lake Chad region.
“My recent directive on the relocation of Army Headquarters (AHQ), Department of Army Training and Operations and Army Logistics to the Northeast Theatre is geared towards ensuring that AHQ provides maximum support to the operation,” he said.
In March, the Nigerian Army moved into the Timbuktu Triangle in Alargano forest area, which has remained under the control of the ISWAP fighters despite sustained military offensive to retake it, to clear suspected ISWAP positions.
However, soldiers faced stiff resistance and challenges from ambushes and Improvised explosive devices and more recently, the negative impact of the rainy season.
