DR Congo Army Kills Mai-Mai, Burundian Rebels
The DR Congo national army, FARDC says its troops killed 33 rebels of the Mai-Mai movement including those of the Burundian Red Tabara and Front Nationale de Liberation (FNL) rebels during operations on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 4 and 5 in the Uvira Upper Plateau of South Kivu.
Three leaders of armed groups were also killed in the operations, the FARDC revealed.
According to the spokesperson of the South Sokola 2 Operations in South Kivu, the operation targeted hideouts of the rebels in the tribal group of Katonera in the Bavira chiefdom.
Since the beginning of this year, several localities of Uvira Upper Plateau have become theatres of clashes between local and foreign armed groups on the one hand and between the armed groups and the FARDC on the other hand, causing several deaths, the displacement of populations and the burning down of entire villages.
