Administrative authorities in Congo Brazzaville have launched operations to track down bush meat traders in markets throughout the country.
In one of such operations, Baron Frederic Bousock, the Prefect of Niara in the south of the country Saturday descended on the central market of Dolisie accompanied by the forces of law and order and agents of the divisional directorate of forestry economy to close down bush meat trading stores in conformity with government directives.
It should be recalled that the Congo Brazzaville government recently decreed the temporary suspension of hunting, capture, transport and commercialization of products from hunting throughout the national territory effective from November 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021.
The objective of the closure of the 48th hunting season falls within the Congolese government’s wish, as guarantor of the management of biodiversity, to permit wildlife species in the country to reproduce with a view to reduce the risks of the disappearance of certain animal species.
“This measure is above all, to the benefit of the rural communities because it guarantees the sustainable utilization of a resource which they are the benefactors and on which they depend for their animal protein,” said an official of the directorate of forestry economy.
The Republic of Congo and the rest of the Central African sub region have during the past years been witnessing a spike in the phenomenon of the poaching of protected species to the extent of their being at the point of extinction.
The prime movers behind the poaching operate in organized gangs financed by international traffickers in illicit wildlife products.
