Armed Group Kills Two Aid Workers, Volunteer In North-central Nigeria
The attackers who picked the calls placed to the victims’ phone lines confirmed the killings and vowed that such will continue until Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom, heeds to their demand.
Two aid workers and a volunteer for 360HSCD, a non governmental organisation working on HIV/AID testing and counseling in Benue State, North-central Nigeria have been killed by an armed gang suspected to be criminal herders.
The incident occurred over the weekend while the aid workers were on routine supervision at Tomanyi village in Guma Local Government Area of the state before they were abducted.
According to a report by Channels Television, local sources called the telephone lines of the aid workers upon learning of their abduction by the criminal herders who answered the calls.
The attackers on responding to the calls confirmed the killings and vowed that such would continue until Samuel Ortom, the state governor heeds to their demands to repeal the prohibition of open grazing across the state.
Additionally, eight corpses were also recovered by security forces, accompanied by youths from Tomanyi village by.
In 2017, the state had passed a law, placing a ban on open grazing in favour of ranching.
Suspected criminal herders have continued to launch indiscriminate attacks on residents across the state in recent times.
Calls and text messages placed to Sewuese Anene, the police spokesperson in the state by HumAngle were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
