UN Commends Creation Of Parliamentary Commission To Probe Killings In DR Congo
DR Congo has set up a parliamentary commission of inquiry into various killings in the country, a move theUnited Nations has commended.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo who doubles as head, United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), has lauded the setting up of a parliamentary commission to probe the killings in the Eastern region of the country.
Bintou Keita commended the move during a press conference on Thursday, April 15, held at the Staff Headquarters of the United Nations mission in Beni, North Kivu.
“I salute the parliamentary initiative of creating an investigation commission on the insecurity situation in the eastern and northeastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the objective of formulating recommendations that would contribute towards the restoration of stability and state authority in the provinces,” Keita said.
He added that the United Nations was prepared to give all its support to the work of this commission of inquiry.
The DR Congo National Assembly had on Wednesday, April 7, adopted a resolution creating a parliamentary commission charged with inquiring into the security situation in eight provinces of the country namely, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Maniema, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele, Haut-Katanga and Haut-Lomami.
During the hot debates leading to the adoption of the resolution, some parliamentarians also suggested the probing of the activities of MONUSCO in the country within the last 20 years.
