Nigerian President Appoints New Acting Police Inspector General

The appointment of a new acting police chief comes at a time when a spike in attacks on the Police who are also part of special forces fighting terrorism, is drawing growing concerns.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Usman Alkali Baba, formerly a Deputy Inspector General of Police, as the acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.

Mohammed Maigari Dangyadi, the Minister of Police Affairs, announced this on Tuesday, April 6, while briefing State House correspondents.

Although Baba’s appointment as the new acting Police chief is subject to the approval of the Council of State, it comes in the wake of the retirement of his predecessor, Mohammed Adamu whose tenure was extended for three months on February 4, 2021.

Adamu was yet to complete the tenure extension before the announcement.

Baba, the new chief, was heading the finance and administration department. He hails from Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria. He holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) and a BA (ED) in Political Science.

He has held several positions and ranks including; Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone-5 Benin, Zone-4 Makurdi, Zone-7 Abuja. Baba was also a Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and Delta Command amongst others.

He is a fellow of the National Defence College and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

His appointment comes at a time insecurity is growing across the country with incessant attacks on security formations in the South, and terrorism in the North.

Baba is inheriting a kidnapping epidemic,  communal clashes, amidst myriads of operational challenges such as underfunding of the police.
