Gabon Borrows $10 Million To Reinforce COVID-19 Response Efforts

Gabon’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday received equipment and supplies aimed at reinforcing its medical arsenal against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The equipment and supplies were acquired through a five billion FCFA (about 10 million dollars) loan from the World Bank under its “Project for Preparation and Strategic Response Against COVID-19”.

The equipment and supplies include medicalised ambulances, personnel protection equipment and diagnostic kits for laboratories.

The project is aimed at reinforcing the health system, especially in the area of prevention, detection and taking charge of cases in conformity with the Gabonese Government’s preparation and response plan against the COVID-19.

It would also finance the training of health personnel and the establishment of new COVID-19 diagnostic centres.

“This project is inscribed within the context of the continued long term engagement made available by the World Bank to reinforce the health systems in Gabon, including the project which is being prepared on basic health treatment, ” Alice Ouedraogo, Resident Representative of the World Bank in Gabon, said.

“The project comes to complete the efforts of other development partners within the context of a coordinated response, ” the World Bank representative added.

The World Bank has been taking rapid measures of a large scale with a view to helping partner countries to reinforce their action against the pandemic.

The Bretton Woods institution envisages deploying up to 160 billion dollars within the next 15 months with a view to “aiding more than 100 countries to protect their poor and vulnerable populations, support enterprises and favour the recovery of the economy”.
